"Our Gundogs are some of the most valuable and sought after dogs in the nation, that is in large part to their training and their maintenance. These dogs are known for their thick, water-resistant coats, which protect them from the elements during hunting season. However, maintaining a duck dog's coat during hunting season requires proper grooming and care. Here are some tips to help you maintain your duck dog's coat during hunting season. Keep in mind, this is a generalized list of tips, as we know a Lab’s coat requires very little maintenance whereas other breeds require many of the items listed in this article."
1. Brush Your Dog's Coat Regularly
Regular brushing is essential for maintaining a duck dog's coat. Brush your dog's coat at least once a week to remove dirt, debris, and loose hair. This will also help distribute natural oils throughout your dog's coat, which will keep it healthy and shiny.
2. Bathe Your (Swamp) Dog as Needed
I love nothing more than a good old “swamp dog” but the smell after a few days makes me reconsider that hug… Bathing your dog is important for keeping their coat clean and healthy. However, you don't want to bathe your dog too often, as this can strip their coat of natural oils. Bathe your dog as needed, using a mild dog shampoo and warm water. Be sure to rinse your dog thoroughly to remove all soap residue.
3. Trim Your Dog's Coat
Of course, a longer coat in a certain climate will be a great insulator but do pay attention to your environment and climate as this will influence this decision. Trimming your dog's coat can help prevent matting and tangles, which can be uncomfortable for your dog. Use scissors or quality-grade clippers to trim your dog's coat as needed, focusing on areas that are prone to matting, such as behind the ears and under the legs.
4. Protect Your Dog's Coat from the Elements
Duck dogs are exposed to the elements during hunting season, which can dramatically take a toll on their coat. Protect your dog's coat from the elements by using a waterproof dog coat or vest (Typically Neoprene material). This will help keep your dog warm and dry and prevent their coat from becoming too waterlogged.
5. Check Your Dog's Coat for Ticks and Fleas
This is a habit I want all handlers to get in the rhythm of doing before and after loading/unloading their gun dog. Ticks and fleas can be a problem during hunting season and can cause discomfort and health problems for your dog. Check your dog's coat regularly for ticks and fleas and use a flea and tick preventative as recommended by your veterinarian.
6. Provide Proper Nutrition
Proper nutrition is essential for maintaining a healthy coat. Feed your dog high-quality dog food that is rich in protein and nutrients. You may also want to consider adding supplements to your dog's diet, such as fish oil or biotin, to support coat health. There are many “Home-made” remedies to aid your dog, please use them with caution and consult a professional before committing.
In conclusion, maintaining a duck dog's coat during hunting season requires proper grooming and care. By following these tips, you can help keep your dog(s) in the hunt!
