The Impact Of Technology On Gundogs: Enhancing Skills and Efficiency

Gundog training has evolved significantly over the years, and one of the key factors driving this transformation is technology. 

From advanced training aids to innovative tracking systems, technology has revolutionized the way we train and work with our beloved gundogs. The gundog world has evolved dramatically over the years and while the way we train gundogs remains the same, the manner in which we do it has. While technology tends to be a sore subject for some, we need to consider what it does. Technology allows for training to be more efficient. Nothing in dog training can be rushed, plain and simple. Technology allows for these portions of training to be less drawn out. In many cases, it allows for the dog to better understand what we are asking of them. This article briefly explores the various ways in which technology has impacted gundog training, enhancing skills and efficiency for both trainers and their four-legged companions.

1. Training Aids:

Technology has introduced a wide range of training aids that have proven to be invaluable in gundog training. Electronic training collars, for instance, provide trainers with the ability to deliver precise and consistent commands from a distance. These collars can be programmed to emit various levels of stimulation, allowing trainers to tailor the training experience to each individual dog's needs. While some trainers choose to stay away from using e-collars, the majority of them do. E-collars have allowed trainers to provide a driving force behind pressure in training schemes.

2. Remote Launchers:

Remote launchers have become an essential tool in gundog training. These devices allow trainers to simulate realistic hunting scenarios by remotely launching dummies or game birds into the air. With the ability to control the direction, speed, and distance of the launch, trainers can create challenging training exercises that mimic real-life hunting situations. This technology helps gundogs develop their retrieving skills and enhances their ability to respond to commands in dynamic environments. While many trainers use other people to assist in throwing birds, otherwise known as “bird-boys”, launchers allow a single trainer to still run a complex training session.

3. GPS Tracking Systems:

Gundogs are often required to work in vast and challenging terrains, making it crucial for trainers to keep track of their location. While GPS tracking is more so suited for upland style hunting, I can say I have used it in duck hunting. GPS tracking systems have made this task significantly easier. These devices, attached to the dog's collar, provide real-time location updates, allowing trainers to monitor their gundogs' movements and ensure their safety. Additionally, GPS tracking systems enable trainers to analyze their dogs' performance, track their hunting patterns, and identify areas for improvement. Where I have found it useful in duck dog training is reading lines after sessions. Most GPS tracking transmitters have a LED screen that gives you direct feedback on what path the dog took. When stretching a dog out on 400+ yard retrieves, it can be difficult to truly see the line a dog takes. Utilizing GPS trailing allows the trainer to see exactly where the go went.

4. Drones

Coming from an Army background, I am not surprised drones have found their way into dog sports. Having a good drone operator is an awesome addition to any dog training staff. Drones are great distractions for working dogs and are great for evaluating performance following training sessions. Think of it as watching film for a professional football player. I’ve found on many occasions that an overhead shot of a dog on a retrieve gives such great feedback in terms of what the dog does in terms of decision making abilities. The drone allows the handler to watch this at an extremely advantageous angle that does not hinder the performance of the dog. I’ve even seen some trainers rig up a drone to drop birds/bumpers from the drone!

5. Training Apps and Online Resources:

The proliferation of smartphone apps and online resources has made gundog training more accessible and convenient than ever before. Trainers can now access a wealth of information, training guides, and instructional videos at their fingertips. These resources provide valuable insights into training techniques, behavior modification, and problem-solving strategies. Additionally, some apps offer interactive features, allowing trainers to track their dog's progress, set training goals, and receive personalized recommendations.

           Technology has undeniably transformed gundog training, offering trainers a wide array of tools and resources to enhance their skills and improve their dogs' performance. From electronic training collars to virtual training platforms, GPS tracking systems to training apps, technology has revolutionized the way we train and work with gundogs. However, it is important to remember that technology should always be used as a supplement to, rather than a replacement for, traditional training methods and the bond between trainer and gundog. By embracing these technological advancements responsibly, trainers can unlock the full potential of their gundogs and create a harmonious partnership built on trust, skill, and mutual understanding.
