"When it comes to chasing birds either chest deep in the swamp or laying still in rows of corn, the protection from the elements and the ability to protect ourselves is a game changer. The same goes for the fearless dogs running out to retrieve our fallen game. In this article we will break down some of my favorite gun dog vests to use in all climates. Vests are a great piece of equipment for our dogs to keep them dry and for them to retain body temperature in those cold climates. Keep in mind, vests must be fitted properly for a proper functioning fit. All too often I see dogs with baggy vests where I question its purpose."
1: MoMarsh Versa Vest
When this vest hit the market, it answered the question for a versatile vest for all climates. “The MOmarsh Versa Vest is designed to adjust to fit any size gun dog, from a 35 lb. dog up to a 100+ lb. dog! Six points of multi-directional adjustability ensure proper fit so you can resize as your dog grows. The tough rubberized neoprene chest panel protects your dog from sticks and briars in the field.” (GunDog Supply, 2023) This vest has multiple camouflage patterns that can easily change out if the weather shifts.
2: Rig 'Em Right Bloodline Elite Dog Vest
“The Bloodline Elite Dog Vest from Rig'Em Right Waterfowl offers the utmost protection for your most reliable hunting partner. The 3-layer construction consists of 3mm neoprene next to your dog's skin for warmth and comfort, a thin layer of foam for added floatation, and an outer layer of heavy-duty canvas for protection from brush and briars. Features 5mm neoprene throughout the chest for flexibility and warmth, and a sturdy braided handle to help your buddy back into the blind. This vest has a more athletic cut around the neck and between the front legs to provide better mobility without rubbing and bunching.” (GunDog Supply, 2023)
3: Tanglefree Dog Vest
This vest is my personal favorite, I consider this a mid season vest with a moderate amount of insulation and not a ton of bulk. You can get a really good fit with these vests and I simply love the simplicity of it, one handle, one zipper and that’s it! For the price point of under $50.00 you cannot beat it. They come in a fair variety of camouflage patterns and will take a beating during those challenging retrieves.
4: Avery Boater 5mm Neoprene Dog Vest
I almost had this vest tied with the Tanglefree vest for the number 3 slot and in terms of build, they are almost identical. Another solid vest for the mid season hunt and possibly the early late season. The only reason this is sitting at the number 4 slot is because of the handles, I personally like a handle raised above the neoprene surface so as to not break the seal of the vest when pulling a dog back into a boat if there is no ramp.
5: Cabelas Neoprene Dog Vest
This number 5 pick may be a bit outdated and I may be leaning on the side of tradition a bit. As we all know, Cabelas (before being bought out by Bass Pro) made some outstanding products within their own line of gear. Back when they still did, their line of dog vests were immaculate. Much like their waders, veteran duck hunters cannot seem to part ways with them and their vests are no different. If you still have these, save them as they “Don’t make them like they used to”.
In conclusion, gear is always dependent on the person (or dog) utilizing it. Gear changes like the weather and brands will be more popular than the other. I can make 1,000 lists on the best this and the best that but if a piece of gear works best for YOU, use it.
