When it comes to training hunting dogs and duck dogs in particular, it's near impossible to not see a bumper in a tool bag or dog-rig. They are the staple of dog training tools and the art of throwing one and understanding the mechanics of a “Bird-Boy” is an entirely different subject. Bumpers are simply retrieving tools, they come in many shapes and sizes but they are all designed with one task in mind… retrieving.
Disclaimer: As always, the items on this list are tools I have personally used over time, if you do not see newer bumpers listed on here...yep you guessed it, I haven't used them. Nor do I find 30+ dollars for one bumper a wise decision for 100 bumpers, but that's just me!
1: D.T. Systems Soft Mouth Training Bumper
Do not…I say again do not sleep on this bumper setup. I have worked with D.T. Systems in the past and I never thought I’d be so hooked on a bumper from them. Their soft hold bumper is designed with enough “Give” to permit a natural hold from your retriever. Tie a double knot on the end and you have a smooth throw from the gunner blind. This model floats beautifully and the color does not fade after years of use.
2: Avery Jumbo HexaBumper
The bumper that changed the game for trainers with its hex design. This allows for ease of retrieving and a cleaner pick up from your dog. Coming in a standard variety of colors, this is a close second pick for the best overall. The only downfall for this falling to number 2 is the price, thes a more expensive than our number 1 pick but get the job done in style!
3: MOmarsh Large "Mark" Dog Training Bumper
This is probably the most recent drop on the gear list to hit the dog training market. The MoMarsh bumper is a monster in terms of size. Going after a pentagon shape design these things make life easy when it comes to spotting them with their bright and vibrant color scheme. These throw perfect, having a solid 8 oz in weight, your team will have no issues lobbing this with a perfect arc. Price point is once again the factor putting this at number 3 for our list.
4: Sport Dog Lucky Dog Bumpers
Ahh old reliable, the SportDog brand bumpers are the original bumpers that you will probably find in almost any training setup. There is nothing flashy or outlandish about these, they are priced accordingly and get the job done, it puts them at number 4 on our list but they are the trusty tool selection for any handler looking to increase their stock.
5: AirFlow Bumpers
Another relatively new style of bumper to hit the dog training world in the most recent years. This bumper is specifically designed to allow your pup to breathe easier on those tough retrieves. I am a big believer in “train how you fight” and these collide with that sentiment; however, an argument can be made that all bumpers do. Nonetheless, these bumpers do not throw as well as the others listed but are an innovative design that is effective.
In conclusion, bumpers are a vital tool to any trainer’s tool bag. Whether you sport the fanciest or the old reliables, the purpose remains the same, tech a proper retrieve. Always remember, nothing will replace the feel, weight and possible struggle of a true/crippled duck in and out of the water.
